Common warning signs

Payment requests

You are asked to pay an application, placement, training, software, or equipment fee to secure work.

Check transfers

You are sent a check and told to return, transfer, or spend part of the funds.

Unverified contact

The sender uses an address or account that does not match the employer's verified domain or public channels.

Unusual urgency

You are pressured to act immediately, avoid questions, or move the conversation away from traceable channels.

Information to protect

Do not send identity documents, Social Security numbers, banking details, payment-card information, account passwords, verification codes, or money before independently verifying who is requesting it and why.

Do not install unfamiliar software or allow remote access to your device because a supposed employer asks you to do so.

How to verify

  1. Find the employer's official website independently.
  2. Compare the sender's email domain and contact details with the official site.
  3. Search for the role through the employer's official career page.
  4. Ask for written responsibilities, qualifications, compensation terms, and application steps.
  5. Contact the employer through a verified public channel if anything is inconsistent.

If something feels wrong

Stop communicating, do not send money or additional information, preserve relevant messages, and contact your bank or payment provider promptly if funds were sent. You may also report the account or listing to the platform where it appeared and consult the appropriate government consumer-protection agency.
